Feeding the girls dandelions
We went to Holtslander Farms yesterday. Well...it's not really a farm, but my friend Chris does have an obscene number of animals for someone who lives in downtown San Jose. (1 dog, 3 cats, 3 fish, 2 hens and now 8 chicks). In the few spaces of her yard not occupied by animals, there is some sort of fruit or vegetable growing. I think anyone can agree, it is an urban farm.
Checking out the new chicks in town
Malachy was very excited to see Mango (the dog). He loves the idea of Mango, but Mango jumps and barks A LOT...and while he is a small dog, it makes the boy a little nervous.
As excited as he was to see Mango, the real excitement was around the chickens. Chris has 2 adult hens that Mal is a big fan of feeding, but she got a bunch of new chicks last week. We dropped into feed the big girls and to check out the chicks before they got too big.
Gently petting the babies
Mal had a zillion questions about the chicks and everything they had in their box. He wanted to pet the chicks, so Chris picked one up for him. He saw that I was nervous about picking one up, so he watched Chris carefully and then explained to me the right way to do it. The next time he wanted to pet a chick, I successfully caught one for him.
Mal is a little afraid of the GIANT cat
He was having a blast and didn't want to leave. He was using the old "Sarasohn Stall" as I tried to get him out of the house. He "had" to say goodbye to each and every animal. When he was finished, he wanted to go back and tell the chickens goodbye again. I have a feeling we will be visiting the farm a lot this summer.
